Head, Neck & Spine Injuries
The most common type of injury we see in our practice is a spinal injury. This includes the neck and back, and it also encompases a wide variety, from sprains and strains to herniations that require a fusion. While spinal injuries happen in many different situations, they are so prevalent because of the strides that have been made in car safety.
Today, almost everyone wears a seatbelt. But in the middle of the 20th century, that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t until 1968 that the US Government required cars to have seatbelts. It wasn’t until the 1990s that Massachusetts required the use of seat belts. As that shift occurred, there was also a shift in the types of injuries that occurred in car crashes.
Without a seatbelt, someone who is in a car accident can get thrown into the windshield, another part of the car, or even another passenger. In extreme cases, someone not wearing a seatbelt can get ejected from the vehicle. This meant that someone in a car accident not wearing a seatbelt would likely suffer catastrophic injury.
Luckily, seat belts prevent many of these types of injuries. However, they don’t prevent injury altogether. Instead, what happens is that when a person’s body is belted to the vehicle, the head is allowed to sway during a collision. This swaying action stretches the spine, especially in the neck, which causes most of the injuries that we see today.
